North Carolina Inmate Search

Updated on: March 4, 2024
North Carolina

One can only make it to the North Carolina inmate records after an arrest and a conviction. The records also feature individuals under probation or parole. They pull information from courts, law enforcement (Sheriff's and police offices), and confinement facilities (prisons and jails) across North Carolina.

The inmate records comprise the offender's official name, gender, date of birth, race, and physical descriptions (hair color, height, eye color, height, and defining marks). They also list the incarceration details, sentencing details, court dates, and crime details.

Searching for Inmates in North Carolina

North Carolina has 61 state correctional centers and prisons spread throughout the counties, each with different custody degrees. The state also features dozens of county jails that house inmates awaiting trial or those with short sentences.

Here are some of the databases you can use for the inmate search:

  • Offender Public Information Search

Also known as the Inmate Locator, this database gives up-to-date information on parolees, probationers, and prison inmates in North Carolina. It is a product of the NC Department of Corrections and the NC Department of Public Safety. Type the inmate's ID or name, and the database will reveal their jail or prison information.

  • Automated System Query (ASQ)

ASQ is a search tool that queries the NCDPS database for information on offenders and inmates. Besides doing this, it generates specialized reports depending on the chosen criteria. You can also use it to get counts and demographic information on offenders.

  • North Carolina Statewide Automated Victim Assistance and Notification Search

With NC SAVAN Search, you can get free, confidential notifications regarding an offender's custody status. NC SAVAN focuses on supporting victims of crime by availing offenders' details to the public.

The service features information on state prisoners, county jail inmates, registered sex offenders, and parolees. It allows you to receive notifications on these details via text message, email, TTY for those with hearing impairment, and phone calls.

  • NC Sex Offender Registry

North Carolina's Sex Offender Registry lists the exact residential locations of sex offenders across the state. The State Bureau of Investigation maintains this registry and mandates sex offenders to register.

  • The Interstate Compact Offender Tracking Tool

Finding parolees or probationers who recently had their supervision transferred to a different state is possible using this search tool. It is a product of the Interstate Commission on Adult Offender Supervision.

  • Law Enforcement Search

If you are a law enforcement agent, you can use the Law Enforcement Search to find parolees, probationers, and inmates in North Carolina. The tool allows you to create detailed offender photo lineups to aid an investigation.
