There are at least three ways to locate someone incarcerated in Minnesota. Check them out below:

Minnesota Jail Roster Inmate Search

If someone is arrested in the last 45 days, they could be in a Minnesota County or city jail. Indeed, Minnesota police departments and Sheriff’s Offices operate city and county jails as their primary holding facilities. The two law enforcement agencies detain anyone found or suspected of violating local and state laws. The detainees reside at the city and county jails for up to 12 months as they await court arraignment, sentencing, settling of bail, or transfer to prison. And, if the detainee faces a misdemeanor charge, they may serve their sentence at a county jail.

Go to the arresting law enforcement agency’s official website and click on the jail roster lookup in the corrections section. The jail roster lookup allows you to use the offender’s name or booking number to retrieve their arrest and booking details from the jail roster. If your search is unsuccessful, the offender may still be undergoing the booking process. For this, call the jail administrator and confirm.

Minnesota Statewide Inmate Search

Minnesota Department of Corrections (MNDOC) is the state agency in charge of state prisons in Minnesota. Hence, if the offender you are looking for is serving time in a Minnesota state prison, use the MNDOC’s offender locator to trace them as follows: -

  1. Go to https://coms.doc.state.mn.us/publicviewer/
  2. Select to search for the offender by Name or MNDOC Offender ID
  3. If searching by name, provide the offender’s first and last names
  4. If searching by the MNDOC Offender ID, type it in the box provided
  5. Click ‘Search’
  6. The search generates the following offender information: -
  • Demographic Information – Name, Mug Shot, Birth Date, MNDOC Offender ID, Current Status, Sentence Date, Expiration Date, Agent
  • Current Offense Information – Highest Ranked Offense, Court File Number(s)

Click on Predatory Offender Search to search for an offender required to register their whereabouts and subject to public notification. Also, click on the List of Active DOC Fugitives to view the list of wanted fugitives in Minnesota.

Federal Inmate Search

Finally, if the person you are searching for is facing a federal crime, they could be in any of the three stand-alone federal prisons in Minnesota. If so, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator to trace them as follows: -

  • Go to https://www.bop.gov/mobile/find_inmate/byname.jsp
  • Search by name or offender BOP Number
  • If searching by name, provide the offender’s name. Narrow the search using the offender’s race, sex, and age
  • If searching by BOP Number, type the offender’s BOP Register Number in the search box
  • Click ‘Search’
  • The search will generate the offender’s name, Register Number, Age, Race, Sex, and Release Date
