Louisiana Inmate Search

Updated on: February 5, 2024
Louisiana

Louisiana has 4 federal prisons, 4 private prisons, 9 state prisons, and 100 parish and municipal jails. The Department of Public Safety and Corrections (DPS&C) is the state institution with full power to manage all state law enforcement and detention centers. The Baton Rouge department is headed by a secretary who is directly appointed by the state governor. Apart from the state prison, it is also in charge of the district offices for adult and juvenile probation and parole.

Inmate Records

A prison or a jail maintains inmate records. While the local parish or city manages jails, prisons are under the purview of the federal and state governments. Parishes, the state DPS&C, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) keep different inmate records. All the records are open to the public per state and federal laws.

Performing an Inmate Search

Inmate searches are an integral part of the inmate record the public needs at any time. Fortunately, it is available to the public through the relevant lock-up authorities, such as the parish sheriff, the DPS&C, and the BOP. Here is how to find an inmate in all scenarios

Parish and City Jails

The sheriff's office is actively on the ground securing the citizen's life and property. As a result, most people arrested are first taken to jail. Luckily all jails keep an inmate roster to ensure you can easily find your loved one who has been locked up in the jail.

You can visit the jail directly or the sheriff's office/city police department to conduct an inmate search. Unfortunately, this may be tedious as you will need some cash for gas and time on your hands. Luckily many parishes and cities in Louisiana maintain a website with a portal where you can conduct an inmate search. All you need to do is search for the jail on a web browser and search for the inmate's full name.

State Jails

All inmate details in Louisiana are kept and available in the Louisiana Automated Victim Notification System (LAVNS) maintained by DPS&C. lAVNs is an internet portal that is updated daily and can be accessed by family members of inmates assigned to state detention centers. There is no information or released inmates. The website is geo-locked and may not be available in certain locations.

Louisiana residents can also use the phone number search by dialing  225-383-4580, which offers the Imprisoned Person Locator. Callers need to provide the inmate's number, Date of birth, and name to access the inmate's housing units.

Federal Jail

All inmates convicted of federal crimes are locked in federal prison. The inmate search is similar across the county. Just visit the BOP inmate locator with the inmate number or full name to search. The website can be accessed across the globe.
