Kansas Inmate Search

Kansas convicts are either connected to the Kansas state prison or county jails. The local government operates county/city jails, while the Kansas Department of Corrections runs the state prisons. There are only 12 state prisons and 105 county jails spread across the 102 counties in Kansas.  

The largest state prison is El Dorado Correctional Facility, with a maximum space of 2,200 inmates while the largest county jai is Sedgwick County Jail which has a capacity of 1,600 inmates. Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility is the smallest jail in the state, with a capacity for 40 juveniles, while the smallest county jail with a 10-inmate capacity is Meade County Jail. There are about 7,400 inmates in the county jails, while there are over 10,000 inmates in the state prisons. 

Municipal jails differ a bit from state prisons in their functions. Jails are often temporary detention centers for inmates awaiting trial hearings but may also be used by those serving short sentences. Jails are holding facilities for inmates that have been found guilty of serious crimes that carry long sentences. 

How to Perform Inmate Search 

Law enforcement agencies generate inmate records to help them identify the inmate and offer the public the crime history of the inmate. All the inmate information is designated by the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA) as public information. This data can be obtained from any of the custodians of it at both the state and county level. 

Any well-meaning member of the public can collect this data from the Kansas Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for state inmates or the local police departments and sheriff offices for inmates in the local jails. Some of the inmate records may contain names, gender, and birth date, as well as mugshots, charges, and prospective release or court dates. 

Since 1980 Kansas has had a database called KASPER, which has the relevant details on all inmates in the custody of the secretary of corrections. KASPER has details on the current inmates, discharged inmates, and inmates on parole and probation. Unfortunately, there is no data on inmates serving sentences in Kansas Prison from other states. Names can only be removed from KASPER when a conviction is overturned or expunged or in case the inmate receives executive clemency. 

You may use KASPER to find the names. Registration number, physical description, conviction description, anticipated release dates, inmates' housing, supervision, and the institutional disciplinary record. Apart from Kasper, many other third-party sites offer the same data without geo-locking. Unfortunately, the data may not be as accurate as the government-provided records, updated regularly to reflect releases, transfers, and new bookings.
