Idaho has a large correctional system comprising 20 county jails, nine state-owned prisons, and five community reentry centers. Each correctional facility holds different inmates depending on the crimes committed and the trial level. Typically jails hold inmates convicted of misdemeanors, mentally challenged inmates, and pretrial inmates awaiting sentencing or trial. On the other hand, state prisons handle inmates convicted of more serious crimes such as murder. 

State prisons are usually larger than state jails in Idaho, with jails having a capacity for 50 to 100 inmates. Ada county jail and the canyon county jail are the largest jails, with a capacity of 1,200 and 800 inmates, respectively. State prisons are larger, with the smallest jail holding 250 inmates while the largest has a capacity for 2,000 inmates. 

The state jails, seven district probation and parole offices, and community reentry centers in Idaho are managed by the Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC). Community reentry centers are facilities that allow inmates to complete their sentences to work while becoming reunited with families and the community. , 

The majority of the inmates in the county are male, comprising approximately 85% of the population and a recidivism rate of ⅓ of all the inmates. The IDOC may send inmates to other states and county jails with insufficient space.

All inmate records regarding inmates in Idaho detention facilities are public information according to the Idaho Public Records Act and the Idaho Public Records Law Manual. Inmate records may include the inmate's full name, crime, arrest date, fines, and release date. Due to this, the records can be offered to anyone who requests them, government agencies, and third-party sites.

Inmate searches in Idaho are easy to complete depending on the institution you need to find the inmate. All inmates incarcerated via IDOC can be found via the Idaho Department of Corrections inmate search portal. There are also third-party sites that offer the same data. Inmate searches are free, and the first three letters of an inmate's name or the first three numbers of their IDOC number provide results. The details you can get in an inmate search are the name of the convict, IDOC number, and the inmate's status. 

The sheriffs of those particular counties hold data from county jails. Most counties have working websites that allow you to perform an inmate search fast. You can also call the jails for an up-to-date inmate roster. For extra information on the inmates such as the release date, feel free to contact the record bureau in IDOC.
