Welcome to the San Juan County, Colorado Sheriff's Office Website

The San Juan County Sheriff is responsible for law enforcement within the county and within the Town of Silverton as well. The town and the Sheriff's Office have had a contract for law enforcement services for more than 25 years. This is an efficient use of resources for both the town and the county. The Sheriff also has the statutory responsibility for search and rescue within the county. San Juan County does not have a jail, but contracts with La Plata County for jail services.

San Juan County has the highest mean elevation in the United States, covering almost 400 square miles of which approximately 86% are Federal lands. San Juan County has become an increasingly popular destination for outdoor recreation and tourism. Recreation covers a wide range of pursuits from ice climbers, snowmobilers and skiers in the winter to the influx of daily train riders and tens of thousands of vehicular visitors during the summer who enjoy camping, fishing, ATV riding, backpacking and many other summer activities. While our crime rates are historically low, we are prepared to deal with any type of incident which occurs. We also work closely with our federal and state partners who manage public lands in San Juan County. Due to our rugged and isolated terrain, the San Juan County Sheriff must respond to a wide variety of incidents under sometimes difficult environmental circumstances. The men and women who work for the Sheriff's Office are proud of our long tradition of service in "Colorado's Most Beautiful County."
